Anime Club

Moderator -Ms. Wood
We are a club meeting weekly to view and discuss Japanese animation, characters, drawing characters, and Japanese culture such as language, music, food, manga and video games/technology, and much, much more!

 

 

 

 

Art Club

Moderator -Ms. Hansen
As the Art Club at Archbishop McCarthy High School, our goal is to provide a creative environment for those who are open to expressing themselves artistically. We dedicate ourselves to achieving this goal, and to improving our school through devotion and talent of our members. Mural projects are geared to building community and school spirit such as the Baseball and Softball murals created by Art club students. Membership is open to all McCarthy students from 9-12 who have an interest and dedication in the subject of art.

 

 

Art Honor Society

Moderator: Ms. Hansen
The Archbishop McCarthy High School chapter of the National Art Honors Society has been established for the purpose of: recognizing those students who have shown outstanding ability in art, fostering excellence and a dedicated spirit to the pursuit of art, and to bringing art to the attention of the school and community. Art Faculty selects students from 11th – 12th grade on the basis of art scholarship, service, and character


 

 

Band

Moderator(s) -Ms. Fontus
One of the fastest growing programs at Archbishop Edward McCarthy High school. The band is split into four different programs: Marching Band, Jazz Band, Concert Band, and Color Guard.

 

 

 

Cheerleading

Moderators: Mrs. Chriswisser, Mrs. Glick, Mrs. Grossi, Miss Lizanne Glick
AMHS Football Cheerleading- There are two Football Cheerleading squads, JV and Varisty with 15-20 members on each. Tryouts are held in May of the previous year. Participants are judged by professional judges in the areas of jumps, cheer, chant, dance and tumbling.

AMHS Basketball Cheerleading
- Basketball cheerleading is an open option for any football cheerleader without having to re-tryout. There are two Varsity teams ranging from 15-20 members on each. Tryouts are held in late October/early November. Participants are judged by professional judges in the areas of jumps, cheer, chant, dance and tumbling.

 

Chess Team

Moderator: Mr. Morano-
When in the course of human events it becomes necessary for students at the Catholic high school level to learn to think, a chess team must be formed! It was for this reason that our AMHS Chess Team was founded in August, 2004. The purpose of the team is to compete in USCF tournaments at the local, regional, state and national level. Chess is an art form and a science. It is a hobby, a pass time, and a passion. Chess is both simple to learn and mysteriously difficult to master. Any fool can move a chess piece, but it takes a master to understand their movement. To be successful a person must fall in love with chess.

 

Environmental Club

Moderator: Mrs. Arango The main focus of this club is to raise awareness to conserve our environment and its resources. Environmental Club members are responsible for a school wide recycling project. Members encourage faculty, students, and staff, to recycle ink cartridges and paper goods, and are responsible for weekly pick up.

 

 

Future Nurses of America

Moderator: Mrs. Murgueytio This club is for students interested in becoming nurses or doctors. They hold several field trips a year to investigate theses fields.

 

 

 

 

 

French Club

Moderator: Mr. Perez The French Club is primarily a social organization which unites those students who are studying French or who have a love of French culture. Meetings are held monthly or bi-weekly after school on a monthly basis. Activities include visits to a French restaurant, movies, petanque, etc. Bake sales are the primary source for funds which support the club activities.

 

 

 

Friends of Animals

Moderator: Mrs. Calder
Friends of Animals is a club specifically for animal lovers. We collect supplies for animal shelters, find homes for unwanted animals, and take field trips to learn about animals and how to protect them. This club is open to students in any grade. All you need is an interest in animals and their welfare. We accept new members every fall and generally meet twice a month.

 

 

 

Florida Future Educators

Moderator: Mr. Saxton-This club is for students interested in becoming teachers or administrators in either public or private school.

 

 

 

 

French Honor Society

Moderator: Ms. Henderson
The aim of the Société Honoraire de Français is to stimulate interest in the study of French, to promote high standards of scholarship, to reward scholastic achievements, to create enthusiasm for and an understanding of Francophone culture and civilization, to promote and perpetuate international friendship, to reward efforts toward furthering solidarity in the French-speaking world.>

 

 

 

 

Future Business Leaders of America

Moderator: Mrs. Zocco -
Future Business Leaders of America is the largest and oldest business student organization in the world! A quarter of a million high school and middle school students, college and university students, faculty, educators, administrators, and business professionals have chosen to be members of the premier business education association preparing students for careers in business. It's simple. We have developed a unique value program that excites students, faculty and administrators, and business professionals to join our organization. If you are interested in developing leadership, communication, and team skills, or simply looking for an organization to meet and network with others at the local, state and national levels, then FBLA-PBL is the organization for you.

 

Interact

Moderator -Mr. Sandoe
The Interact Club is a high school service organization that is affiliated with Rotary International. McCarthy's Interact Chapter is sponsored by the Cooper City/Davie Rotary and focuses on creating friendship and goodwill within the local and international communities. Toward such ends, Interact engages in community service projects, the development of leadership skills, and international student exchange programs.

 

 

 

International Club

Moderator -Mrs. Gonzalez
Purpose: To make students aware of the cultural diversity in our school and community, as well as to foster an appreciation for the richness of various cultures. Activities: The International Club is a service club. Some of our past projects have been: adopt a family at Christmas with Hope Outreach, sell Christmas cards handmade by the mothers of students of St Patrick Mission School in Ferrier, Haiti; raise money for the Millenium Project to end extreme poverty in Africa; raise money for Heifer International to help struggling families throughout the world.

 

 

 

Link Crew

Moderators- Mr. Boes /Mrs. Kohrt. Link Crew is a positive and high energy orientation program for incoming freshmen. Link Crew offers new students the opportunity to meet with junior and senior Link Crew leaders in small groups to explore the strategies necessary for success in high school. Freshmen are afforded the opportunity to meet new people and make new friends in a comfortable and relaxed environment.  A year long program includes both social and academic follow up activities.  Students may apply to become a Link Crew leader during their sophomore and junior year. 

 

Mu Alpha Theta

Moderator -Mr. Saxton The principle purpose of Mu Alpha Theta is to stimulate a deeper and more effective interest in mathematics. To qualify for membership in the Society, one must currently be enrolled in a fifth semester of High School Math and must be enrolled at the Honors or Advanced Placement level. Members must maintain a 3.0 in each math class of which they are enrolled. Each member is required to provide tutoring for math students throughout Archbishop McCarthy High School.

 

 

 

Newspaper / Journalism

Moderator: Mr. Ballantyne
The Maverick Post newspaper club is an award winning newspaper and member of the International Honor Society Quill and Scroll. The newspaper meets weekly to discuss current events, write articles, edit works, and produce the monthly student newspaper. The club takes field trips to the Miami Herald, takes photographs at sports and activities, and works on developing young journalism students with internships to the Sun-Sentinel and Miami Herald. In order to be an active member, students are required to cover local news events, school related activities, and complete online research in a professional manner.

 

Key Club

Moderator: Mr. Morano
Key Club is the oldest and largest service program for high school students. What makes Key Club so successful is the fact that it is a student-led organization that teaches leadership through serving others. Members of the Kiwanis International family, Key Club members build themselves as they build and serve their schools and communities.

 

 

 

Maverick Maniacs

Moderator: Mrs. Chriswisser
The Maniacs is a club for those students that have contagious school spirit. The club meets weekly to make & hang posters to advertise for the athletic events of the week. Maniacs are the loyal and enthusiastic fans that attend games throughout the year. Members also received rewards such as t-shirts, magnets and clings for their cars for attending the games.

 

 

 

Maverick Television Club

Moderators: Dr. Brown
/Mr. Bertolone- Our club produces a TV episode airing bi-weekly that covers sporting events, school activities, and hilarious skits and commercials. If you are interested in writing, editing, camera work or being a star, come out and join Archbishop’s version of the not ready for prime time players.

 

 

 

 

Model United Nations

Advisor -Col. Cosgrove
Model United Nations or Model UN is a simulation of the United Nationsthat aims to educate participants about civics, effective communication, globalization and multilateral diplomacy. In Model UN, students take on roles as foreign diplomats and participate in a simulated session of the UN. Studentss research a country, take on roles as diplomats, investigate international issues, debate, deliberate, consult, and then develop solutions to world problems. In the past five years the club has attended simulations at Harvard, Catholic University, UF, FIU and several others. Advisor; Col. Cosgrove

 

 

 

National Honor Society

Moderators: Mrs. Moss/Mrs. Gandarillas- "The National Honor Society is the leader among organizations and societies that promote appropriate recognition for students who reflect outstanding accomplishments in the areas of scholarship, character, leadership and service."(Marano, NHS) Membership in this chapter is a privilege bestowed upon a student by a Faculty Council and is based on the above mentioned criteria. Any junior or senior, who has maintained a cumulative 3.5 GPA during his /her high school years, has served 100 hours of community service over the school's requirement, and a clear discipline record is eligible for nomination to NHS. Once selected, members meet regularly on Wednesday mornings at 7:30am in room 409.

 

National English Honor Society / Literary Club

Moderator: TBA -Founded and endorsed by Sigma Tau Delta, the NEHS is the only national organization exclusively for high school students and faculty who, in the field of English, merit special note for past and current accomplishments. Individual high schools are invited to petition for a local chapter, through which individuals may be inducted into Society membership. Immediate benefits of affiliation will be national recognition, scholarship eligibility, and opportunities for national networking with others who share enthusiasm for, and accomplishment in, the language arts. Eventually NEHS will hold conferences and provide ways to link NEHS with other honor societies and with organizations related to the field of English.

 

Science Club / Brain Bee

Moderator: Dr. Torres
The science club promotes curiosity and a sense of wonder. Serves as a mean to satisfy the human need to understand ourselves, and care about others. As a member of the science club students expand their knowledge about the surrounding environment encouraging lifelong exploration.

National Science Honor Society The Science National Honor Society is for students who excel in science. This honor society has several requirements for students to fill and accomplish in their membership years. We participate with other science clubs in their programs and create our own projects each year. In addition, we may attend science related field trips.

 

 

 

Spanish Honor Society

Moderator -Mrs. Irlanda-The Sociedad Honorária Hispánica promotes the Spanish language and culture through service to others.

 

 

 

 

Pre-Law

Moderator -Mr. Lobermann
The Pre-Law Club is intended for any student that may be interested in pursuing a career in the field of law. The club meets regularly to discuss timely topics regarding issues of the law including Supreme Court decisions. Debate and discussions on various issues in society today, especially those regarding students are explored. We are sponsored by the Law School of St. Thomas University.

 

 

 

Pre-Med Mavericks

Moderator -Mrs. Calder
The Pre-Med club is designed for students who have an interest in medicine or a medical career. We have taken trips to various places to learn about different careers including Memorial Hospital, Animal Kingdom, University of Miami, and the Discovery Museum. We also support medical causes such as our Breast Cancer bracelet sale in the fall and Shamrocks for Muscular Dystrophy in the spring. This club is open to sophomores, juniors, and seniors, and an application including a brief essay is required. We generally meet twice a month.

 

 

Salsa Club

Moderator -Ms. Martinez
We are a club meeting weekly to learn salsa and other forms of Latin dance. This club dedicates its time not only to the pursuit of learning dance but also to sharing that gift with others through performances and community service projects.

 

 

 

 

 

SADD/SWAT Club

Moderator -Mr. Covone
The SADD and SWAT Club at AMHS exists “To provide students with the best prevention and intervention tools possible to deal with the issues of underage drinking, other drug use, impaired driving and other destructive decisions (www.sadd.org).” Students accomplish this mission through organizing and implementing events such as the Red Ribbon Campaign against drug use, the Prom Promise Presentation emphasizing a safe alcohol-free prom, and anti-tobacco campaigns

 

 

Student Ambassadors

Moderator -Dr. Brown
The student ambassador program was created in 1998 to maximize student talents in the areas of leadership and community support. Members of the school community, teachers, and administrators of Archbishop McCarthy High School select students to this most prestigious organization. We envision these students as our Ambassadors. Student Ambassadors are always giving a friendly smile to someone lonely or who feels out of place offering good cheer and help. They are protecting, challenging, speaking in our good name, being respectful and supportive at all times. These talents are very strong indicators to one's ability to lead the way and wear the good title of Student Ambassador.

 

Student Government

Moderators -Mrs. Braun / Mr. Boes
The purpose of student government is to build a sense of family in the school and to encourage enhancing student leadership skills in order to be nominated and voted for the various positions. Student Government raises money for the school and administers student oriented events such as pep rallies, Homecoming and Senior Prom.

 

 

 

Support Our Troops

Moderators -Col. Cosgrove and Mrs. Zocco
This group is a non-political organization dedicated to “Caring for those who have born the battle”. In support of that goal the club provides gifts and goodies to soldiers in Iraq and Afghanistan. We write get well cards to wounded warriors donate books to Navy ships and in general seek ways to show our concern and gratitude to our armed forces.

 

 

 

Technology/Media Club

Moderators -Mr. Rolland/Ms. Henderson
The Technology/Media Club works to promote technology and reading in the school, as it provides aid in media technology to its members. The Technology/Media Club also plans an educational trip annually in the spring season to help enhance the club members in the advancement of technology and its practical use.

 

 

 

 

Yoga Club

Moderator -
Mrs. T. Braun . Yoga Club meets once every week to practice yoga postures, stretching, and breathing techniques by following various yoga DVDs. Students do not need to have any previous yoga experience and only practice what level they are currently comfortable with—each posture has a modification for beginners or advanced practitioners. .
