Participates in John Paul II International Film Festival

Frank Castillo, Director of Campus Ministry for the High School and Philosophy teacher invited to screen films at John Paul II International Film Festival

Southwest Ranches, FL… November 4, 2009…  Archbishop McCarthy High School, 5451 South Flamingo Road in Southwest Ranches is participating in the John Paul II International Film Festival, a grassroots festival which features different movies from renowned as well as new film makers who sought to capture the spirit of the late Pope through the artistic medium of film.  The festival, which through November 7th , features films that celebrate life by acknowledging the strengths, struggles, and triumphs we experience when striving to give meaning to human existence.   

“The movies are modeled after the views and ideals of the late Pope John Paul II , (http://www.jp2filmfestival.com) ,” said Frank Castillo, Director of Campus Ministry for the High School and Philosophy teacher and film screening panelist for the festival.    Archbishop McCarthy High School became involved in the festival when Castillo, was asked to be a panelist in the screening of festival films.   “AMHS actually sponsored one of the nights when the film Bella was featured,” said Castillo.  “The movie, directed by Alejandro Gomez Monteverde, deals issues quite prominent in the Respect Life debate.  We wanted to engage the audience in a constructive theological debate about this delicate and controversial issue in our society,” continued Castillo.   

Castillo will also will serve as panelist in the films The Boy in the Striped Pajamas and The Human Experience.  These movies will play at the Jewish Community Center in Miami and Florida International University’s Modesto Meidique’s Campus, respectively.   The Boy in the Striped Pajamas will be featured Thursday, November 5th at the JCC, 11155 SW 112th Avenue, Miami, FL 33176 at 7:30 PM and The Human Experience on Saturday, November 7 at FIU College of Law RBD 1100, Modesto Meidique’s Campus at 7:00 PM.

Besides feature length films, the festival also screens short films.  Former Archbishop McCarthy High School theology teacher and Assistant Campus Minister Jim Eimmerman, from Ft. Lauderdale, FL, produced and directed the movie Messy Spirituality.  His movie was one of the 2009 Official Selections and was screened on October 31st.

Frank Castillo teaches Philosophy and Theology at Archbishop McCarthy High School as well as Film Appreciation during the school’s Summer Enrichment Program.  He also serves as Religious
