Mu Alpha Theta Society:

This club is designed for the students who excel in mathematics. Students in grades 10 to 12 who have had or currently taking honors or AP Math classes are eligible. Freshman can be associate members, but must be currently taking a honors math class. Students must maintain a “B” average in all of their math classes and have a good conduct grades in all courses. Members must pay a yearly $3 Florida state membership fee and a one time fee of $2 for the national membership dues. Part of the duties include tutoring students and attending district competitions throughout the South Florida area.

Music Honor Society- TRI-M

The Tri-M Music Honor Society is the international music honor for middle/junior high and high school students. It is designed to recognize students for their academic and musical achievements, reward them for their accomplishment and service activities and to inspire other students to excel at music and leadership. Through more than 4,500 chartered chapters. Tri-M has helped thousands of young people provide years of service through music in schools throughout the world.

National English Honor Society (NEHS):

The National English Honor Society was founded March 25th, 2004, by Sigma Tau Delta, the International English Honor Society. The NEHS goals are to recognize on the national level those who, on the basis of academic grades and performance, merit special note for past and current accomplishment; to nurture these persons in such ways that they are encouraged to develop further their abilities in the various fields of English; and to encourage members to use their talents in the service of others.

Students of various backgrounds and grade levels can share with on another their mutual appreciation of, and excitement with, literature, fine writing, language and media studies.

The applicant must meet the following criteria:


* 3.5 in English and 3.0 in general GOA

* Interest in writing literature

* Applicants must provide writing sample

Once accepted must attend meetings, workshops, fundraising and service hours. (not maintaining 3.0 could jeopardize members)

National Honor Society:

Membership in this chapter is privilege bestowed upon a student by a Faculty Council and is based on the criteria of scholarship, character, leadership, and service. Any junior or senior who has maintained a cumulative 3.5 GPA during his/her high school years is eligible for nomination to the National Honor Society. The invitation to join does not guarantee a student will be selected.

Following the guidelines established by the National Organization, when a candidate is invited to join NHS, the following criteria is used to invite a student to join NHS.

* The Student Activity Information form documenting their two current leadership positions (one must be within the school) and the completion of an additional 100 service hours above the school requirement.

* The student will give their teachers a Student Evaluation Form to complete. The teachers rate the student on their NHS characteristics. The criteria are listed below.

* Discipline and Attendance records are reviewed. Any student with a disciplinary referral or unexcused absences will not be selected. All other disciplinary actions such as, detentions and demerits are also reviewed.

* All completed forms are submitted to a Faculty Council. This council is comprised of five (5) members, who review the forms and recommend the students that are to be selected. Members of the council serve for two years.

* The Faculty Council presents their recommendations to the administration for induction in the AMHS National Honor Society. Students will be notified if they have been selected and will then be inducted into the AMHS National Honor Society.

If a student is not selected and wishes to appeal the decision, the student is to write a letter to the Principal providing any additional documentation that would substantiate their request. The letter will be forwarded to the Faculty Council for further review. The student will be notified of the councils’ decision. All decisions are final

On the Student Evaluation Form, the teachers rate the student in the following areas:

THE STUDENT WHO EXERCISES LEADERSHIP:

* Is resourceful in proposing new problems, applying principles, and making suggestions..

* Demonstrates leadership in promoting school activities.

* Exercises influence on peers in upholding school ideals.

* Contributes ideas that improve the school.

* Successfully holds (2) current school offices or positions of responsibility, conducting business effectively and efficiently, and without prodding, demonstrates reliability and dependability (one must be within AMHS).

* Thoroughly dependable in any responsibility accepted.

THE STUDENT WHO SERVES THE SCHOOL/COMMUNITY:

* Is willing to uphold scholarship and maintain a loyal school attitude.

* Volunteers, dependable and well-organized assistance, are gladly available, and are willing to sacrifice to offer assistance.

* Works well with others and is willing to take on difficult or inconspicuous responsibilities.

* Cheerfully and enthusiastically renders any requested service to the school or community.

* Shows courtesy by assisting visitors, teachers and students.

THE STUDENT OF CHARACTER:

Once selected all members are expected to comply with school rules and NHS obligations. Students are expected to attend all meetings and actively participate in all activities. In all cases of infractions of the NHS Constitution and By-Laws and school guidelines, the adviser will notify the individual member in writing, before and after any dismissal proceedings in order to allow a reasonable amount of time for correction of the deficiency-except in cases of flagrant violation of school rules or civil law. All final dismissals shall be in writing to the student and shall be in accordance with the NHS National Constitution.

International Quill & Scroll Honor Society

Membership in this chapter is a privilege bestowed to a student by the heads of the chapter based on meritorious work and achievement within the journalism and yearbook fields. Candidates must be Juniors or Seniors that have earned a minimum cumulative GPA 3.0 in their general scholastic work, and have done superior work in some phase of journalism or yearbook writing, editing, production, or management.

Science Honor Society:

The Science National Honor Society was developed to honor students who have a high GPA in their Science and other Advanced Placement classes. The students are eligible for induction as Juniors, with previous AP classes, or as seniors. During their membership the students enter the Science Fair, volunteer one hour per week in the laboratory, and aid other science related clubs i.e. Environmental Club or Science Club. Seniors who have completed all of the requirements designed by the Science Honor Society will receive a cord at graduation and a certificate of completion. Membership for a student in the SNHS is conferred in the last two years of secondary school education. The applicant must met and maintained the final criteria:

* A student must have and maintain a 3.0/4.0 grade point average to be a member.

* A member must be enrolled in at least one honors or upper level science class during or prior to the eleventh grade year.

o A member must be enrolled in at least one second year honors or upper level science class during or prior to the twelfth grade year. If second year honors or upper level science courses are not offered by the school, then the student must be enrolled in a second first year honors or upper level science class during or prior to the twelfth grade year.
bullet A member must maintain a B+ average (or equivalent) across all science courses.
bullet All members must attend one local chapter officer's lecture annually.

Spanish Honor Society (Rubén Darío Chapter of the Sociedad Honoraris Hispánica):

The purpose of the Spanish Honor Society is to promote the Spanish language and culture at AMHS. Students are initiated in the second semester of Spanish III/Span Speak III honors. The applicant must meet the following criteria:

* Be enrolled in the second semester of Spanish III Honors or Span Speak II Honors. Freshmen may be initiated. The applicant must have had three semesters of Spanish in high school. NOTE: The Credit-by-exam does NOT count as a year of Spanish taken in high school (per National Director 5/30/03).

* Have a “A” as the semester grade for each semester of Spanish taken in high school. A “B” is acceptable for levels III and IV, which are honors classes.

* Have a Career GPA of 3.0 or higher.

* Fill out the application supplying the appropriate documentation requested.

* Submit a typewritten essay on the topic, “How can I, as a member of the Sociedad Honoraria Hispánica, promote the Spanish language and culture through service to others?”

* The Spanish Honor Society sells fairly traded coffee and cocoas from Latin America, India and Africa as our service project.

* SHS provides tutoring for Spanish students throughout the school.
