Mavericks celebrate first regional title

Fort Lauderdale - With only three seconds remaining in the 160-pound title match at Saturday's Region 4-1A wrestling championships at Cardinal Gibbons High, Archbishop McCarthy's Tyler Duncan reversed Gibbons' Elliott Brady for a 2-1 victory.

It was that kind of day for the Mavericks.

Archbishop McCarthy won its first regional title in school history, with a final score of 195.5. It advances a school-best eight wrestlers to the Class 1A state championship in Lakeland on Feb. 19-20.
"I couldn't be more proud of the kids," said Mavericks coach Joe Bertolone. "Last summer they made a commitment to be a team and they worked so hard for this. This is sweet, but the one we really want is next week."
In all, 19 Broward wrestlers advance to states in Class 1A, with seven winning individual titles Saturday.

The Mavericks' Chad Lomax won at 119 pounds, gaining a quick takedown before cradling Key West's Maximo Llama and recording the pin in 50 seconds. The victory provided ample breathing room for McCarthy, as Key West finished second with 167 points.
McCarthy's T.J. Marshall took the 215 bracket with a 5-4 victory over Key West's Paul Leatherwood, recording a takedown with 15 seconds left in the match for the comeback win.
